ANSES publishes its report on the risks to human health associated with bisphenol A

Two years after its first report on the dangers of bisphenol A (BPA), ANSES released on March 9, 2013 a new report on the assessment of risk to human health resulting from exposure to BPA.

The French National Agency for the Safety of Food, Environment and Labour (ANSES) issued on March 9, 2013 a new report on the assessment of risk to human health from exposure to bisphenol A (BPA). This review indicates that BPA poses a potential health risk, even at low doses, especially in pregnant women. It notes that food contributes 84% to BPA exposure in pregnant women.

  • Along with this opinion on BPA, ANSES also examined data on other bisphenols that are potential candidates to replace BPA, as well as on bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE).
  • These documents are the result of a multidisciplinary collective expertise, carried out by a working group dedicated to endocrine reprotoxic disruptors, which also benefited from the support of several experts of ANSES.
  • Three researchers of INRA TOXALIM (Research Centre in Food Toxicology) in Toulouse, Jean-Pierre Cravedi, Martine Kolf-Clauw and Catherine Viguié actively particiated to this evaluation.

The documents are available herein for download by clicking on the links below, or on the ANSES website.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) should give an opinion on endocrine disruptors this fall. ANSES expects a critical review of tolerable daily intakes currently set by EFSA.

The research conducted by several teams of Toxalim has contributed to the production of the body of knowledge considered in this evaluation *.
