Mycotoxines: Isabelle Oswald (INRA, Toxalim) at the spotlight in Singapore

Specialist in mycotoxins, she was the only French researcher to speak at the 5th World Nutrition Forum

During the 5th World Nutrition Forum held in Singapore from 10th to 13th October 2012, Isabelle Oswald, head of the Immuno-Myco-Toxicology team of TOXALIM, presented the results of a trial aimed at comparing the toxicity of fumonisin B1 to that its hydrolyzed form HFB1

  • Histopathological and biochemical analyses, and the study of the expression of cytokines performed on blood samples and tissue biopsies in pigs, highlighted that intestinal and hepatic toxicities of the HFB1 form were greatly reduced compared the non-hydrolyzed form of the fumonisin molecule.
  • It was concluded that enzymatic degradation of fumonisin B1, using the enzyme carboxylesterase, seems to be a useful approach to reduce exposure of livestock to fumonisins.
  • This work was carried out in the framework of the CIFFRE PhD Thesis of Bertrand Grenier, and published *

* Grenier B, Bracarense AP, Schwartz HE, Trumel C, Cossalter AM, Schatzmayr G, Kolf-Clauw M, Moll WD & Oswald IP. The low intestinal and hepatic toxicity of hydrolyzed fumonisin B1 correlates with its inability to alter the metabolism of sphingolipids. Biochem Pharmacol, 2012, 83:1465-1473.

On the occasion of this international congress, Isabelle Oswald gave an interview, published in La Revue de l’Alimentation Animale, N°662, décembre 2012. (In French)
