Mycotoxins: deoxynivalenol weakens the intestinal barrier

Faced with mycotoxins the intestine better watch out!

The research team on Immuno-Myco-Toxicology (E5-IMT) led by Isabelle Oswald (Research Director) at TOXALIM (INRA, Toulouse) has shown through combined in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo approaches, that a cereal mycotoxin, deoxynivalenol, decreases the barrier function of the intestine.

  • This results in a decreased expression of proteins responsible for the integrity of the intestinal barrier.
  • The decrease in the barrier function of the intestine has potentially adverse consequences in terms of increased susceptibility to infection and absorption of other food contaminants.
